Day 1: Albuquerque to Canyon de Chelly

Sitting in Bob and Mary's car (actually Mary's car) is like flying first class!  Very comfortable and every convenience to hand, including an automatic opening and closing door, so you don't have to lift a finger, my dear!

We drove from Albuquerque to Gallup encountering a traffic jam a mile or two long which necessitated a detour along a smaller side road, which turned out to be Route 66.  Yeee haaa! Another goal accomplished, although in a very small way.

In Gallup we stopped at Richardson's trading post.  Peter saw a bowl that he liked which was priced at $45000.00.  Really!

We had lunch in a diner with red leather banquettes, what else!  My will power kicked in and I ignored the Mexican specialities on offer and had a chef's salad!  Peter had a garden omelette with all the trimmings!

Then on to Canyon de Chelly. Lots of places to stop and get views down the canyon.  Amazing rock formations in the gold/red sandstone and glimpses of houses hewn out of the rock by the ancestors of the Pueblo Indians.  Wonderful hot, dry air and a cloudless blue sky!

We stayed last night at Thunderbird Lodge and had our duty free single malt sitting outside our rooms.   Food in the evening not good!

This is Navajo country and the dining room was filled with rugs.  Bob and Mary collect rugs so are very knowledgeable about designs...and prices.
