Saturday in Austin

We spent Saturday and Sunday exploring Austin...but avoiding the music festival Austin City Limits!

On Saturday morning we started at the State Capitol and wandered around inside admiring the scale and the lavishness.

At the Women's Club

Then we joined a guide for a free walking tour of the Bremond block...a block containing houses preserved from demolition because they belonged to members of the same, intermarried families.  A variety of styles including high Victorian.   Quite a find in the middle of a city of high rise glass and granite.   One of the homes is now the headquarters of the Austin Women's Club (membership by invitation only and the lady presidents still identified by their husband's names)  There were a couple of the 'ladies' present at the house to welcome us and they told us that when a past president died, no-one knew her first name.  She had always been known as Mrs. Sam S. Walker!    We smiled politely but didn't challenge...well it wouldn't have been polite!   Despite the heat, it was an interesting tour.

In the afternoon we went to the Blanton Art Gallery on the University of Texas campus where they were showing an exhibition of Renaissance etchings from Augsburg and we also took in the modern galleries.
