Day 10: Getting to know the area

A really lazy start to the day - maybe it was the party last night, but more likely we have at last shaken off the jet lag.  We slept to 9.30 am and as the clocks changed here in Texas overnight, we got up at 10.30!

After breakfast we had a Skype conversation with Eliot and the boys.  Saul was parked in front of the camera and looked mystified but gorgeous.  Abe was put out that Eliot had stopped his video in order to make the call, so we was less pleased to see us on the screen, but we did have some fleeting words and a few radiant smiles!

We drove south from College Station to a small town called Navasota where we parked and wandered up and down the high street, stopping to let a long train go through.

Many antique shops and charming old buildings line the streets.

We were pressed into going in to a theatre for a performance which was starting at 2.0 pm but we hadn't eaten.  They directed us to a diner up the road where the decor was influenced by it's former existence as a garage.  We had a excellent omelette breakfast.

Then into the antique shops where I bought two ancient pyrex type dishes to augment my limited selection of cookware.

A selection of radios
We drove on to Washington-on-the-Brazos, the birthplace of Texas where the state park is home to a reconstructed farm and a good museum. The skies were blue, the day was sunny and warm and we wandered about the farm buildings and in the farmhouse and had an impromptu history lesson from a charming lady in period costume.

We met lots of friendly people today.  They are all initially mystified by our accents and interestingly don't place us immediately as English.
