Day 11: Domestic chores

A quick 2 mile walk first thing followed by a spin round the supermarket for coffee making accessories for Peter's office.  Then back to the house and down to domestic chores.

Monday, washday.  I clip on a harness and abseil down to the bottom of the washing machine.  Well, not quite, but it is vast!  Getting the laundry out of the machine does involve leaning over with my feet off the ground.  I feel guilty when I put on a fraction of a load but we need the clothes and it would take a month to build up enough laundry for a full load.

Then a little light cleaning before tackling the carpets and floors with the vacuum cleaner, a heavy upright model with terrific suction!    I'd planned to wash the floors but discovered that the floor washing gizmo required a bottle of special washing liquid to be clipped into it.  As the bottle was empty, there was no way to wash the floor.  Oh for the simplicity of a mop and bucket.

Tonight we fired up the enormous gas BBQ in the back yard.  There's an awful lot of debris in the bottom which probably needs to be scraped out, but we made do with scraping lumps off the grills and getting it hot enough to burn off the worst.  We peered anxiously at our steaks, they seemed to be taking a long time and weren't exactly sizzling!  In the end we pronounced them cooked and ate them.  Delicious!   Afterwards we did a bit of Googling to get some tips for using gas grills (only every used charcoal before) and  realised we may have made the fundamental mistake of not closing the grill! Oh well, we'll get it right next time!

Another search through the television channels this evening only produced frustration and disappointment.  Reduced to watching a very old black and white movie "Mrs. Miniver".
